Salbabida: Art that Keeps us afloat

September 21, 2021 - October 30, 2021

This exhibit showcases original art made in 2019-2021 in the midst of the pandemic, Almeda fire, and Black Lives Matter protests.  Gambrel Gallery hopes to demonstrate the many ways that art offers a path to resilience. We are grateful for the 15 artists in our community that showcase their work to help us process the complex emotions of this time.

Why ‘Salbabida’?

In Tagalog, the word ‘Salbabida’ is derived from the Spanish word ‘Salvavida’ or ‘lifesaver’.  In the Philippines, the word is used to refer to any material that keeps you afloat.  For so many, art is their ‘Salbabida’ and we wanted to provide a space to celebrate this.
